Peg Pennell
Free Motion Appliqué With Embellishments

Any Level

Create a unique wall hanging all your own!  You will learn “Thread Painting” machine-appliqué and free motion quilting techniques in addition to using easy designing techniques where the fabric does the work.  There will be a demonstration on hand-embellishing with beads.  You should have a good start on a wall hanging by the end of class.

Fabrics:

  • One yard BACKGROUND fabric - choose a non-busy print, solid or a tone on tone fabric.  Will also need fabric for binding, but not in class.
  • Batting - 36”x44” piece (low loft cotton suggested)  WILL need this in class.
  • One yard backing fabric - whatever you like, I like prints.  WILL need this in class.
  • Appliqué fabrics - Best to use several different fabrics.  Larger prints with easy to identify lines around each motif are the best.  Background color will be cut away - chose fabrics for motifs only. Think various sizes, some geometrics or linear and curving designs. Precut a number of the designs from each fabric before class. Using sharp scissors, cut the motifs just outside the design lines - 1/8“ is enough. Think oversized motifs rather than small.  Only cut a couple motifs from fabrics that are questionable.  Bring along all your scraps to cut from in class!

Supplies:

  • Sharp, pointed fabric scissors
  • Fine, sharp straight pins - 100 -150 without plastic heads
  • Wash-out glue stick or Elmer's Washable School Glue - optional
  • Threads - Several spools - assorted colors and types, ones that coordinate and contrast with your motifs and background fabric. Don't have to be cotton.
  • Embellishments - Seed beads, bugle beads, small buttons, charms or what suits your fancy in colors to coordinate with motifs.
  • Beading thread -  Nymo thread comes in many colors.  Can use hand-quilting or regular thread.  Recommend a thread conditioner like beeswax, Thread Heaven, etc
  • Hand sewing needle - Small sized hand-quilting needles or beading needles.  Be sure your needles will fit through your beads!
  • Sewing machine - Needs free motion capability.  Be familiar with your machine, have the appropriate feet and know how to set up the machine for free motion.
  • Miscellaneous - Extra machine needles (sharp pointed ones, NOT universal point), scissors, pencil and paper, small trash bag, snips, ripper, extension cord, power strip, etc.

FS02
Vi Colombe
LONE STAR WALL HANGING
Intermediate - Advanced

This is a fun, laid back class. The information is taught in a simplified manner and can be applied to any quilting.  It includes a study of color values in the Lone Star and many helpful tips that Vi has learned and developed. “Image mirrors” will be used to see how color values interact and how the finished quilt will look - layout can be changed before any stitching is done!  By the end of this two-day session you will have a new, easy understanding of the Lone Star and a completed 44” wall hanging top.

Fabrics:

  • 1 yard each of four colors, prints or solids:
    - 1 multi-colored
    - 1 light
    - 1 medium
    - 1 dark
  • 1 1/2 yards for background fabric - may want to bring 2-3 possibilities or may purchase at Merchant's Mall

Supplies:

  • Rotary cutter, mat, 6” x 24” Ruler
  • Glue Stick, optional
