Ami Simms
Twisted Sisters
Beginner to Intermediate

Light and dark fabrics are stitched or “sistered” together, sliced and recombined to make twisting pinwheel-type blocks that fit together with or without sashing strips.  Other options include floating the pinwheels, folding 3 dimensional block centers and experimenting with leftover chunks, bits and pieces to create more quilts.  You'll have a lot of choices.

Fabrics:
Can be scrappy, coordinated or in between.  The greater the variety of fabrics, the more fun.  Don't haul more than 10 pounds.

  • Bring equal amounts of paired lights and darks or paired color #1 and color #2.  Fat quarters or 'regular' yardage work. (Each pair of fat quarters yields three blocks; each pairing of 'regular' yardage yields six blocks and some extra pieces.)
  • Fabric for 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” block centers (color #3 or a repeat of #1 and #2) are also required.
  • Bring sashing fabric if desired or as safety net if your cutting/sewing techniques aren't the best.

Note: Overachievers may cut strips from each pair into 3 1/2” x 44” (twist) and 5 1/4” x 44” (background) strips if working with full-width yardage.  This means, of course, that they will be committing to a block strategy without hearing what Ami has to say about fabric combinations.  Who knows?  She may say something important in class!

Supplies:

  • Twisted Sisters Rotating Template & Pattern is required and can be purchased in class, from her website or at quilt shops
  • Sewing machine
  • Neutral thread
  • Rotary cutters, mat and ruler

M'Liss Rae Hawley
SCRAPPY KALEIDOSCOPE

All Levels

This is a very fun, informative class!  The quilt is a great 'canvas' for revealing your fabric history.  Use leftover strips from loads of other quilts, even strips from childhood projects, or fat quarters - the more fabric the better!  M'Liss gives expert tips and discusses how color and fabric work to make fabulous quilts.

Fabrics for 65 1/2”x 65 1/2” quilt - yardage based on 40” wide:

  • 4 1/4 yards total of a wide variety of prints, ranging in value from light to dark - wedge (A)*
  • 1/2 yard total of assorted light to light-medium prints - corner prints for block corner triangles (B)**
  • 1/2 yard total of assorted medium-dark to dark prints - corner prints for block corner triangles (B)**
  • 3/8 yard fabric - inner border
  • 1 1/2 yards fabric - outer border

Needed to finish quilt but not needed for class:

  • 3/4 yard fabric - binding
  • 4 1/4 yards fabric - backing
  • 5/8 yard fabric - hanging sleeve
  • 74”x 74” batting

*  Yardage is approximate. Aim for a mix of 1/3 light prints, 1/3 medium prints and 1/3 dark prints.
**  These may be from the same color family - or not.

Supplies:

  • 9 1/4” kaleidoscope triangle ruler, optional
  • Clear template material to make the wedge, instead of the ruler
  • Sewing machine in good working order, needles
  • 100% cotton thread for piecing
  • Fine pins with glass heads
  • Scissors and a seam ripper
  • OLFA rotary cutter (new blade), cutting mat, rulers
  • M'Liss's Scrappy Quilts - pub date: May 2008, available at local quilt shop, online at C&T and amazon.com, in class

Pre-Class Preparation
Cutting Directions:

Cut strips on the crosswise grain (selvage to selvage). Please come to class with a selection of the following strips.  We'll cut the corner triangles in class.

From the variety of prints ranging in value from light to dark (A), cut a total of 150 strips, 20” long and varying in width from 1 1/4” wide to 2 1/2” wide.  This is an approximate number.  M'Liss will help you in class with fabric placement of stratas.

John Flynn
TRIANGLE SPIRALS WALLHANGING

Intermediate

John designed this exciting block which looks like a Snail's Trail until you look closely; it curls out from a hexagon!  With lots of pieces, accurate cutting and sewing are a must.  The precise templates, and the piecing-aids in the template set, make this possible.

  • 8 fat quarters of solid or solid-reading fabrics, contrast to background in value or hue - spirals

Option 2 - Purchase a pre-cut Triangle Spirals kit for $35. - includes acrylic templates.  Kit makes a 36” x 42”.  Colors will be brights.  Bring 1 1/2 yard of a dark solid-reading fabric for the background.

Supplies:
  • Sewing machine in good repair, extra needles
  • Straight-handled OLFA 28mm rotary cutter
  • Larger rotary cutter for cutting strips, optional
  • Rotary mat and ruler
  • Colored pencils, optional
  • Template fee: $10. If not purchasing the kit

FROM PHOTO, TO PATTERN, TO QUILT
All levels

Learn the technique of turning a photograph into a pattern and then into a quilt, and how to finish the edges with an artist's facing. You will be making “Rocky Mountain Sunrise” (25” x 20”) using the fused appliqué technique.  This class is not for facial portraits.  No sewing machine required!

Fabrics:
  • White or natural muslin - 27” wide x 22” high
  • Three large white(ish) clouds - 1 to 3 different fat quarters of mottled white, off white, light beige or gray, or fabrics with glitter or sparkle
  • Center sky: mottled apricot - 27” wide x 11” high
  • Upper blue sky: mottled blue - 27” x 10” high
  • Blue-gray cloud in lower sky: mottled or somewhat horizontally striped blue-gray - 27” wide x 6” high
  • Large dark gray rock: dark mottled or marbled gray - 18” wide x 4” high
  • Medium gray rock: medium mottled or marbled gray -  13” wide x 4” high
  • Light gray rock: light mottled or marbled gray - 4” square
  • Blue and green near large mountain: mixed blue and green - 20” wide x 8” high
  • Gray-blue-green rocky area on blue green near mountain: mottled gray-blue-green - 10“ wide x 5“ high
  • Tree clumps on rocky area - scraps of fabric resembling trees or vegetation
  • Green near mountain: green with any kind of appropriate scaled tree design
  • Blue distant mountain ridges: scrap pieces of blues ranging from light to dark. Can mix in some greens or blue-greens.  Largest piece would need to be 12“ wide x 4“ high.  You will need 11 different fabrics if you don't want any repeated.  Remember they need enough contrast to be seen as individual mountains.  Printed textures can help add contrast.
  • Miscellaneous small scraps for small clouds ranging from mottled blue and violet, mottled blue and gray, sunrise pinks, apricots and pale oranges
  • Large tree in center: mottled light, medium and dark green (batik or tight weave fabric works best)
  • Wonder Under or your favorite fusible web: 2 yards
Supplies:
  • Pins, large fabric scissors, very sharp small fabric scissors, paper scissors
  • One photograph that you would like to make into a quilt - blown up on a copier to approximately 8”x10” (color or black and white) Note: You will trace this in class, ready to work on at home.
  • One overhead transparency film sheet - 8 1/2 “x 11” (or can purchase from teacher for 25 cents)
  • One ultra-fine point  Sharpie permanent marker
  • Thin plywood board or some firm surface (foam core board from art supply store or thick piece of stiff cardboard) a little larger than 25“ wide x 22“ high Cover this with towel or other iron on-able surface, secured with masking tape to back.  We pin the pattern down to the board and assemble the project on top so needs to be this size.
  • Mechanical pencil and block gum eraser that doesn't smear
  • Small set of colored pencils
  • Mini craft iron with very small triangular head, with extension cord, optional. These can be shared among 2-4 people.
  • Pattern fee -  $7.00, includes 2 copies of pattern used in class (each measures 25”x20”)

COSMIC POPPIES
All Levels

Don't let the curves and complex design fool you.  This pattern is good for a confident beginner and beyond.  Few points to match and accuracy in cutting and sewing isn't important.  The gentle curves are only slightly more challenging than a straight seam.  Make a small wall hanging or a lap size quilt.  EQ6 will be available in class to help you visualize your design before you start cutting.  Have fun playing with color, value and texture.

Fabrics:
No set amount of each fabric - everyone's design will be different.  Choose a color scheme - bring a variety of light, medium and dark fabrics.  Scraps work well but should be at least 6” square for the small pieces, fat quarters for bigger pieces.  Needs a variety of colors and textures so is a good choice for a “stash” quilt.

Batiks, tone on tones, solids, small prints, subtle stripes, plaids and marbles work well.  Reversible fabrics (like Batiks) can be used in both block configurations.  Stripes and plaids cut on bias add variety.  For wall hanging, designer fabrics and “non-cottons” may work.  Bring plenty of fabrics in case you change your mind and need a replacement.

51”x 60” Quilt - General yardage guidelines:
  • Yellow centers: 1/4 yard total of variety of fabrics
  • Red petals: 1 1/4 yard total of various values and textures. Bigger pieces need to be at least 11” square.
  • Blue, green and purple background: 1 1/2 yard total of various colors, textures and values. Bigger pieces - at least 11” square.
  • Border: 3/4 yard total
  • Feel free to select the colors you like best.
Needed to finish quilt but not needed for class:
  • Backing: 3 yards or enough for your design
  • Batting: 60”x70” or the dimensions of your quilt
  • Binding: 2/3 yard

(OR)

18” Square Wall Hanging - top probably finished in class

  • 6-8 fat quarters in harmonizing colors with a lot of contrast.
Needed to finish wall hanging but not needed for class:
  • Backing and Batting - 24” x 24” each
  • Binding - _ yard
Supplies for either project:
  • Marking tools - colors that show up on your fabric
  • 18” square template plastic and/or freezer paper
  • Sewing supplies including a sewing machine, extension cords, thread, cutter and large mat (at least 12”x18”), scissors, seam ripper, marking tools and anything else you need for sewing
  • 16” x 16” Ruler or larger, can share
  • Design wall - 40” x 50” (20” x 20” for small) - piece of flannel backed tablecloth or piece of white flannel
  • Pattern fee -  $4.00, purchase in class
