Fold outside FQ in half along the 22 inch side, right sides together. With 1/4 inch seam, sew side and
bottom together of outside piece. Trim lower corners diagonally. Trim off selvedges.
Fold lining FQ in half along the 22 inch side, right sides together. With 1/4 inch seam, sew side and
bottom together of outside piece but leave 5 inches unsewn along side (for turning). Trim lower corners diagonally.
Turn lining right side out and press. Do not sew open part of side seam yet.
At this point, your bag is tall. Depending on personal taste or items to be eventually 'wrapped', you
may want to trim several inches off the top of the outer fabric and the lining of the bag. Trim same amount on each.
Sample shown has 3 inches trimmed.
Insert lining (right side out) inside the outer fabric, right sides together. Pin top edges together,
matching side seams. Sew with 1/4 in. seam allowance all around.
Open out, and reach through unsewn side seam and pull right side out. Sew up side 5 inches. Press
all neatly.
Tuck lining inside outer bag. Press. Sew neatly around top with 1/4 in. seam. Pick out lower corners
to make them square and neat. If you prefer a square bottom, reach inside the bag to each corner and pull both layers
inside to form a triangle. I estimated a 1 1/2 inch triangle. Draw a line across that triangle and
sew. Do not trim.
Casing: Approximately 3 inches from top, draw a stitching line on outside using chalk or disappearing pen.
Draw another line 1 inch below. Pin through both layers. Stitch both lines keeping lining flat and neat.
On the outside side seam carefully pick out 1 inch of threads on the seam. Using a safety pin (if needed)
on an end of your cord or ribbon, thread your cord (etc.) through the casing. Knot the end of the cord or fasten cord
keepers to the end.
Please put your completed Friendship Bag in a small paper lunch bag (not see-thru!) and staple or tape it shut.
Bring it with you to Registration. Have fun!
