John Flynn
ARABIC LATTICE WALLHANGING
All Levels

An easy and versatile quilt pattern - you can make a tessellated set, an offset set or a pinwheel all from the same template set.  This makes a great scrap quilt with many setting options. John even uses plaids.

Fabric:
Option 1Bring your own fabric
  • 1/2 yard each of two solid or solid-reading fabrics for the center four patches
  • 8 or more - 1/4 yard pieces (or larger) of assorted light and dark fabrics for the 'blades' - long quarters work better than fat quarters
  • 1 1/2 yard coordinating solid IF you are opting for alternate offset block setting

Option 2Purchase a pre-cut kit for $43. including the acrylic templates.  Kit finishes 45” x 54”.  John will have at least two colorway laser cut kits available.
Option 3:  Bring 1/2 yard each of two contrasting fabrics if you just want to learn the technique in class.

Supplies:
  • Sewing machine in good repair, extra needles
  • Straight-handled OLFA 28mm rotary cutter
  • Larger rotary cutter for cutting strips, optional
  • Rotary mat and ruler

Judith Allen “Judie” Zinn
APPLIQUE STUFF YOU WANTED TO DO - BUT WERE AFRAID TO TRY
All Levels

How about learning to do a simple three-fold bias that can be many different sizes, pointy points, and circles that are actually round?  Those bumpy lumpy areas on edges and curves that are supposed to be smooth - you can rid yourself of them forever.  And let's not forget the always elusive heart cleft - no more fuzzy, sticky-out threads. This is a techniques class that covers just that - appliqué techniques.  This is really how-to with hands-on, not another bag of guilt from some unfinished class project.

Supplies:

  • Basic sewing kit
  • Fabric scissors
  • Small sharp scissors which cut cleanly to the point
  • #2 pencil (mechanical or wooden)
  • White regular thread for basting - not silk
  • Big basting needle - like a #10
  • Thimble and needle threader if you use them
  • Work lights with suitable extension cords, optional
  • Kit fee -- $10.00 - includes:
    Fabrics
    Precut templates
    Silk thread
    Needles
    Appliqué pins

  • Tray to hold and separate the beads. Ice cube tray is adequate.
  • Hand needles: Your finest size 11 or 12 quilting and appliqué needles.  Do not need special beading needles.
  • Needle threader
  • Small scissors
  • Erasable fabric marking pens or pencils
  • Magnifier, optional
  • Fibers and ribbons for embellishment, optional
  • Materials fee: $5.00 - covers special beading thread and use of Esther's bead supply

SPM84
Ami Simms
THE OLD ORDER AMISH

This is a presentation about Ami's experiences staying with an Old Order Amish family in northern Indiana.  It was while writing her thesis that she put her first stitches into a quilt.  She says she did it way back in 1975 when she was young and stupid.  When the Amish women asked if she wanted to borrow a thimble she said “No thanks. Don't need one.”  They all giggled. Then she showed them, by bleeding all over their quilt!  She will come dressed in Amish clothes and show pictures of daily life in and around Middlebury, Indiana.  This is NOT a lecture on antique Amish quilts but should be of interest to quilters who wish to gain more of an insight into Amish life and the background from which these quilts come.

ARE YOU UP FOR A CHALLENGE?

Over Gloria's years as a quilter she has participated in many challenges.  This is a trunk show of quilts she's made for these challenges.  Included will be quilts from her small group and quilt guild challenges, Anna's of Cedar Creek and the Hoffman Fabric company challenge.  She has entered the Hoffman challenge for 17 years and has had 6 quilts selected to travel and be exhibited across the country.  She will have all of these quilts to share, except this year's - it is on the road!  She will be giving tips and inspirational ideas on doing challenges with the hope that she might inspire other quilters to take on a few challenges of their own!
